ILJA FUNDRAISER

During the annual Jāņu/ St. John's Day Festival, which was held on June 26 at the Latvian Community Center in Indianapolis, the Latvian Youth Association of Indianapolis (ILJA) cooked and served over 300 people at the Festival. ILJA served hamburgers, hot dogs, sauerkraut, potato salad and chips. It was hot and humid, well into the mid 90’s. ILJA would like to thank everyone who helped and supported us. We could not have done it without your help. Especially a big Thank you to the sauerkraut cooks, who prepared over 100 pounds of sauerkraut. ILJA is using the proceeds to help it organize the Annual American Latvian Youth Association conference which will be held in Indianapolis from November 25th to 28th.

Jāņi/ St. John's Day Festival

General News

Jāņi/ St. John's Festival

The annual Jāņu/ St. John's Day Festival was held on June 26 at the Latvian Community Center in Indianapolis. This year nearly 400 people of varying nationalities including Latvian, Estonian, Lithuanian, Scottish, Polish, Swedish and the Viking society attended the festival. Activities included culture presentations & performances, an interactive Viking Village, a bounce house, games, dancing, singing and of course eating and drinking. It was a hot day, but luckily it did not rain. Traditionally, it rains during Jāņi, especially in Latvia. As has been the tradition the past few years, there has been a tug-of-war competition between the different nationalities. This year, like the past previous years, Team Latvia won. The judges estimated the combined Latvian team members’ weight at over 1,700 pounds. Looks like the hard training during the year of drinking and eating has really paid off. This year the Latvian Youth Association of Indianapolis cooked and served the food during the festival. Singing and dancing went well past midnight. We hope everyone had a wonderful time, and we look forward to seeing everyone again next year. Click here to see a few pictures taken during the festival

“Jautrais pāris” 60th anniversary

Jautrais Pāris (Folk Dance Group)

 "Jautrais pāris" 60th anniversary

Foto of current and past dancers
On May 8, 2010 the ensemble celebrated its 60th anniversary with a performance, dinner, and dance at the Latvian Community Center of Indianapolis. The performance featured the ensemble’s children’s group with 20 dancers, the youth/young adult/adult group with 30 dancers, and the senior group, “Jautrais solis,” with 12 dancers. The Indianapolis Lithuanian Folk Music Ensemble “Biru Bar” accompanied several of the dances and provided dance music later in the evening. The audience of nearly 250 included many former dancers – from central Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, New York, Massachusetts, Minnesota and California. After the performance a group picture was taken of all current and former dancers. A buffet dinner, raffle, and dance followed. An exhibit of “Jautrais pāris” memorabilia – posters, performance programs, newspaper articles/photos, honorary certificates, T-shirts, pins – was displayed in the Riga Hall. Attendees could also purchase copies of the “Jautrais pāris” 50-Year History publication and the 60th Anniversary Memory booklet. Official group photos from previous years – magnified and placed on poster board – were displayed in chronological order on the walls of the National Hall. Decorative Latvian ornamental symbols cut out from orange and white art paper hung gracefully from the ceiling of the hall. The stage scenery featured two tall, Latvian ornamental ‘sun posts’, each with a round, illuminated yellow-orange piece in the middle, reminiscent of Baltic amber.
